The authentic title on the autograph manuscript is the first verse of the epigraph Destruction of Psara by D. Solomos, “Στων Ψαρών την ολόμαυρη ράχη” (Upon the blackened ridge of Psara).

Psara, small island in the central Aegean, totally destroyed by the Turks in 1824 during the Greek War of Independence. Out of a total of 30.000 inhabitants and refugees from other islands, only 3,000 could be evacuated; the others were either killed or sold into slavery. This event, together with the destruction of the island Chios, awakened the conscience of the European peoples to the need of assistance to the Greeks and led, ultimately, to the independence of the country.

Solomos, Dionysios Count (1798 – 1857), one of the first Greek poets who, by his decision to write in the demotic, helped to elevate the spoken language of the people to literary heights. His passionate artistic response to the cause of “Greek freedom” inspired him to write the Hymn to Freedom, which later became the National Anthem of Greece having been set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros.
