Folk poem. 1911.
One of the numerous folksongs (demotic songs), dealing with the life and deeds of the “Klephts”, who were active before and during the Greek War of Independence. A Kleftis (lit. thief), somewhat similar to a contemporary guerilla, took to the mountains, conducting his resistance with booty stolen from the Turks as well as the local population (hence their name). The “Klephptic” songs are all in the demotic language.

Drosinis, Georgios (1859 – 1951), poet, prose writer and editor of literary journals, belongs together with Palamas to the generation of the Demoticists which appeared about 1880. As a member of the Academy of Athens, he contributed greatly to the literary achievements of the so-called “new Athenian” school and remained to the end a sensitive, noble representative of the arts.

Folk poem. 1911.
One of the numerous folksongs (demotic songs), dealing with the life and deeds of the “Klephts”, who were active before and during the Greek War of Independence. A Kleftis (lit. thief), somewhat similar to a contemporary guerilla, took to the mountains, conducting his resistance with booty stolen from the Turks as well as the local population (hence their name). The “Klephptic” songs are all in the demotic language.

Poem, Spyros Matsoukas. 1928.
Matsoukas, Spyros (1870–1928), popular poet of fiercely nationalistic orientation. He became involved in the wars of liberation of the still enslaved regions of Greece (Cretan War of 1897, a.o.). He authored several collections of patriotic poems encouraging the fighting spirit of the Greek soldiers and devoted much effort to the care or their orphans.

Venizelos, Eleftherios (1864 – 1936), great liberal statesman from Crete who initiated the democratic development of 20th century political life in Greece. Kalomiris’ admiration for Venizelos was unshaken by the ensuing political strife in the country.
Doxas, Angelos (1897–1986), pen name of Nikolaos Drakoulidis, physician, poet and playwright.
