Mesaritissa (lit. woman from Mesaria). There are several locations on the Greek islands with the name Mesaria. The song belongs to a group of folksongs from Cyprus, thus locating the Mesaritissa on this island. The Mesaritissa from Cyprus is sung in different ways depending on the exact location on the island (e.g. in Tylliria, near Morfou, a syllable is repeated after each verse, so that there are several ways in which to sing this particular song).
